Background: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have emerged as a pivotal pharmacological intervention in the management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Beyond glucose lowering, their role in cardiovascular protection is of paramount interest. Objective: To evaluate the impact of SGLT2 inhibitors on major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and heart failure hospitalizations. Methods: A review of phase III clinical trials (EMPA-REG, CANVAS, DECLARE-TIMI 58) involving over 30,000 patients was conducted. Data were analyzed for primary endpoints including cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, and stroke. Results: The analysis indicates a significant reduction (14-17%) in MACE among patients with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Most notably, a 30-35% reduction in hospitalizations for heart failure was observed consistently across all trials, regardless of baseline HbA1c levels. Conclusion: SGLT2 inhibitors should be considered not merely as glucose-lowering agents but as organ-protective therapies. They significantly reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in high-risk T2DM populations.
